Laser Precision Machine Levelling
19-12-2008

The Hamar L740 series scanning laser levels provide ideal levelling solution for all machine tools.

Fast and accurate levelling and alignment of large machine tools is possible with Hamar L740 series of ultra-precision scanning laser levels:

The system provides many advantages including:

  - Highest precision in the industry

  - Very easy to use

  - Powerful and fast measurement features

The extremely precise laser planes created by the scanning beams of the Hamar system are able to provide an alignment reference that is level to less than 0.005mm/metre and flat within 0.0025mm/metre.

This levelling accuracy is up to 10 to 20 times better than many other laser levelling systems designed for less accurate work than levelling of machine tools: lathes, grinders, machining centres, gantry mills or floor borers.

Combined with Hamar's wireless radio targets that are able to measure the laser beam position with a standard resolution of 0.002mm, this ultra-precision levelling laser allows machine beds and ways to be set to an unparalleled level of precision over lengths up to 60m.

Unlike a traditional machine level, the laser target may be placed at any point on the machine to instantly read the height deviation from level at that point.

As the scanning beam is visible over a full 360 degrees, the system is also extremely fast to set up and allows an entire machine bed including the guideways at each side to be measured and levelled in a single laser setup. The actual machine bed height or rail height at each jacking position is able to be measured precisely and adjusted according to a live alignment reading provided by the wireless target directly to the hand-held alignment display.

A simple magnetic mount and adjustable height spacers allow parallel machine surfaces (such as guide ways) at any height on the machine tool to also be measured and set to the same level alignment.

A target mounted on the machine spindle may also be traversed through the full plane of movement to confirm the level and straightness of axis motion at every part of the machine travel and check spindle and quill parallelism and level.

An outstanding additional feature of the Hamar system is the availability of up to three mutually perpendicular laser planes projected directly from the unit which are square to each other withing 1 arcsec (0.005mm/m).

Two perpendicular vertical planes and one horizontal plane allow the squareness of all axes of a machine to be measured very easily and very accurately over the full travel length of travel at the same time as checking the straightness of each individual axis.

This allows the machine column to be set to a true vertical, perpendicular to the horizontal axes.

The patented features of the Hamar multi-plane scanning laser system provide both an incredible level of accuracy for machine tool levelling as well as being fast to set up and allowing measurement of  the complete machine geometry in a few hours. No other laser system is able to provide this combination of features.
